Electrical Testing and Inspection

Electrical Testing and Inspection

Testing electrical installations is always an interesting task. We often get to see the nuts and bolts of most buildings during this process.

The whole purpose of electrical inspection and testing is to determine if the wiring within a building is safe for continued use. Referencing the current wiring regulations BS7671 and the regulations in force at the time of the original installation. It is important to note that we cant or at least should not make recommendations based on what our ideal installation would look like! currently a lot of companies do not take this into consideration. Safety is the prime goal and anything unsafe or something that could develop into an unsafe installation will be highlighted and coded within the documentation we reference the regulations that apply to such issues. Things that do not meet the current wiring regulations but that are not unsafe or dangerous can be coded (C3) or noted for information during future testing or to bring the installation right up to date.

The documentation used is generally called an EICR (electrical installation condition report) and is laid out by the IET. Anyone ordering electrical inspection and testing should expect to receive this document. It should be noted this is not a certificate. It is a report and action might be needed once you receive the report to make good any faults discovered. In the past this document was called a PIR (Periodic inspection report).

Inspection and Testing periods are usually selected by the prior inspector and tester but guidance is given by the IET. In most installations 3-5 yearly periods are standard but depending on your installation and the environment it is used periods of a few months all the way up to 10 years are possible. A lot of this is common sense, more harsh work environments are tested much more often than a domestic house. Although arguments can and have been made to test the domestic sector more regularly.

This is a basic introduction to electrical inspecting and testing. I have tried to avoid going to in depth and give a good overview of what it is all about. The main aim is safety and preventing electric shocks and fires. If you want to discuss your electrical testing needs please contact me any time.
